Kai's Corner

It has been over a year now since I received the call from (cue loud scary music) The Biggest Loser that has taught me so much about myself. Throughout what my family and I now refer to as my “reality period”, much like Picasso’s blue period, I learned a lot about health, diet, and fitness.  However, I learned more about perseverance, determination, friendship and competition. For those of you who have seen me on TV, you know I have a penchant for rambling. So, I will keep this as succinct as possible and try to let you in on a few things that I think are important or unimportant about my experience. I will do this in list form as, yes, I am the kind of person that adores lists, forgive me. These are the top 25 things I learned while losing 120 pounds this past year on national TV:

1. Wearing black, although slimming, cannot disguise 262 pounds on TV. Even if you wear a black burqa, everyone knows you don’t weigh 110.
2. Staying within your 1500 calories for the day by eating only potato chips will make you feel completely different than if say, those calories were from fruit, protein, veggies and good carbohydrates.
3. Anything difficult at first is usually worth it.
4. I make ugly faces when I cry and America is NOT afraid to tell me.
5. Lifting IS a vital part of an exercise routine.
6. Embarrassment is a waste of time. I learned this lesson when my body was “detoxing” for the first two weeks on the ranch and I had to do EVERYTHING while still wearing a microphone. Oh yeah, just image being the audio guys for that!
7. If someone you barely know or don’t love tries to tell you who YOU are, ignore them. The only really important opinion of you is your own.
8. Too much competition can be bad for your soul.
9. 1000 calories a day coupled with 6 hours of intense exercise is a very BAD idea.
10. Trust people, not everyone is out to screw you.
11. Protein shakes, healthy food, and veggies may not be delicious at first, but give it less than three months and your taste buds change dramatically. Unhealthy foods just taste horrible after a while.
12. When another person shows up at your door at 6am saying, “Hey, weren’t we supposed to workout this morning?” it is harder to skip your workout.
13. Going to the gym in negative 15 degree weather is a bitch, but worth it.
14. Sometime you really do need to eat a little more and workout a little less to lose weight.
15. Photo shoots actually are hard work. I am not justifying $20,000 modeling fees by any means, but you try holding it in a smiling pose for 10 hours straight while people look at you like meat with good lighting!
16. People think that because you were on TV, you cannot hear them when they talk about you right next to you.
17. Running is amazing, but you can accomplish the same health benefits without some of the negatives by walking.
18. No one needs a TV show to lose weight.
19. Losing weight slowly IS the best way.
20. Family, friends, and following your heart are what is most important in life.  People ask me if money was my goal through this, and I have always said that money is nothing but a thing. What’s important is how you live your life and the legacy you leave.
21. A good trainer can work wonders, just as a bad one can wreak havoc.
22. I look terrible as a blonde.
23. A gym with no bathroom or air conditioning is not my idea of a ranch vacation.
24. Be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it.
25. Find people in your life that believe in you, like you believe in you, and surround yourself with them!!!
