With all that has been happening in the news, it is easy to become overwhelmed with all the things going on in the world. Sometimes we feel hopeless, and don't know what we can do to help. I believe that we are in an information overload period. What I mean we get inundated with information! From email to voicemail, instant messaging, cell phones, blogging, talk radio, 24 hour news, and so on, and so on. When do have time to clear your mind?

Our bodies were meant to move and work. I find it amusing that parents get upset at there children for not sitting still. When I was younger, we were always riding our bikes, playing sports or just old fashion playing for fun. The television was not on very much, and if it was on the channel selection was very limited. Now we have 100 channels of television, computer games and the internet. When was the last time you saw kids playing outside? Are we as parents too worried about something bad happening to our kids? What if we went outside and joined them? Or are you too busy watching televiaion or just surfing the internet?

Most people when they start an exercise program want to lose weight. They also want to feel better and have more energy. How can this be accomplished without adding even more to a already full plate? For me personally, when I am not feeling well is when I need to exercise the most. For those of you who exercise in the morning, have you noticed how beautiful and quiet it is? How many grumpy people do you run across? Not too many.

When we exercise endorphins are released into our system. Endorphins are a feel good hormone released by the central nervous system that can stay elevated for up to 24 hours after exercising. In my own experience my food choices are poorer when I am not as active. Sugar and caffeine also raise endorphin levels, but only for a short time. Then you get addicted to that mini high. The problem is the added pounds and depression will fuel the feelings of guilt and of failure.

Exercise can help you deal better with stress. When I ask people how they deal with stress, most respond that they either hold it in, or they need to drink alcohol after work to help them wind down. Again, why not let your body deal with stress naturally?

Here are some suggestions that you may have not thought about:

Go dancing or learn how to dance,
Work in the garden,
Yard work,
Yoga,
Walk the dog/dogs,
Play basketball,
Play tennis,
Hit some golf balls at the driving range,
Go to the batting cage,
Swim laps,
Go to a playground and swing,
Play with your kids.

Client of the Month

Barbara has done a GREAT job. She has been coming in since March. Here are her stats:

Body fat from 20.8% to 14.3%
Resting heart rate 80 to 76 beats per minute (lower the better)
Flexibility 14” to 18” (she went from the 14th percentile to the 51st percentile for women her age)

I am proud of her accomplishments and look forward to her continued success. Barbara’s husband has just started with Functional Conditioning and I am sure he will do just as well.  Read what she had to say in her own words...Click Here.

Notes From The Sun...

A cowboy walks into a saloon and starts shooting at the man who is stirring up trouble at the bar. The bullets don’t affect him at all. The waitress comes by and tells him, “Shoot at the projector not at the screen.”

People are killing themselves trying to lose weight or to get fit – going after one fad diet after another, or the greatest and latest workout equipment (screen)…with no consequence. What really matters is figuring out what is fueling the behavior or habit that is causing them to gain weight (projector). If you are finding yourself shooting at the screen, stop driving yourself crazy and learn new ways to turn off the projector.

Be aware of your trigger points. When do you find yourself at the refrigerator or heading for the remote control? What causes you to shut down? What triggers you to participate in activities that don’t propel you towards your fitness goals or any goal for that matter?

In my own experience of losing weight, I have found the most effective way of changing my habits (besides having a desire to do so, and being aware of my trigger points) is to set REALISTIC goals and be accountable to someone I trust. Nothing will zap your passion quicker than unrealistic expectations. In the next two weeks, be aware of your trigger points. When you’re finding yourself making choices that are not moving you towards your goal, make a mental note of it or better yet journal about it.

In the next two weeks, make a commitment to yourself to find someone who’ll help you stay accountable  – whether it’s a trusted friend, life coach or counselor. A life coach can be invaluable in supporting you to discover your trigger points, and creating the body and life you want.

We are now offering life coaching services through Delta Coaching, LLC. Call The Sun at 303-523-5690 to schedule a complimentary session. Be sure to do a few sample sessions with different coaches before you hire a life coach – not every coach will be a fit for you. You’ll know when it’s the right fit.
